Celebrating Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month: A Guide to Recommended Reading and Films

Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans whose heritage spans Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The term "Latinx" has appeared in recent years as a gender-neutral alternative to "Latino" and "Latina," recognizing the diversity within these communities, including Afro-Latinx and Indigenous cultures, which are now integral to this celebration. Originally observed as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, the celebration was expanded to a month-long observance by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The addition of "Latin" heritage broadens the recognition to encompass all Latin American cultures, including non-Spanish-speaking communities.

In celebration of this vibrant month, we have compiled a list of recommended books and films that highlight the multifaceted experiences of Hispanic, Latinx, Afro-Latinx, and Indigenous communities.
